How do I reduce background noise on vinyl albums and hiss on tapes?

There are a couple different types of audio filters that you can use to do this. Most of them fall into one of two types: static or dynamic. Static filters usually limit the high-frequency content of the material by applying a fixed high-frequency roll-off at a predetermined point. The roll-off can be very steep or relatively shallow. (The roll-off is usually expressed as “X dB per octave” above a certain frequency. The larger X is, the steeper and more severe the roll-off.) In GoldWave, you can adjust these values in Effects, Filter, Noise Reduction. Dynamic filters vary greatly in their design and purpose, but they tend to apply the filtering when the sound level drops to a point where the noise might be noticeable. The GoldWave NoiseGate is a good example of a dynamic filter. You can adjust it to address your specific noise issues. One suggestion…try it on a small piece of your audio file first before applying it to the entire file. Return.
