It sounds to me like the internal components of the external hard drive have been permanently damaged. If I am correct, it is unlikely you will be able to recover your data OR use the drive again. While I feel strongly that formatting the disc will not help you, it can’t hurt you much either. One point to make: MAKE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that you check the “quick format” option when formatting the drive or else YOUR DATA WILL BE LOST. After formatting the drive and attempting to recover the data using ERP, format the drive again and try and place new files on it. If you have any sort of issues this will confirm my suspicion. The problem is within the external hard drive, but it’s probably not the storage component (the actual hard drive inside the external enclosure). It’s probably the controller chip inside the device which translates signals and controls the drive.
