How do I recognise dry rot, wet rot and woodworm?
Both dry and wet rot causes timber to lose tensil strength – so the wood becomes soft and brittle with dry rot and soft and wet with wet rot. The latter is often accompanied by mould and fungal growth. Woodworm appears like dart holes in a dart board across the surface of the wood, which may have fine powdery dust (known as frass) around the holes. An over abundance of adult beetles in the affected area is also a sign showing that larvae have hatched.
