Should you need an exact copy of your return, fill out Form 4506. Follow the instructions and mail it to the IRS with a check or money order of $57 per year needed, to the order of the “United States Treasury”. The IRS will generally keep copies of your return within the past six years. Should you not need an exact copy, tax return transcripts are available. Fill out Form 4506-T or call (800) 829-1040 and follow the instructions. In this case, there is not a charge for a transcript and should arrive within two weeks of you calling in or mailing out a request. However, the IRS will generally only keep up to three years of a return to send back as a transcript, as needed.
