How do I re-pot a spiky cactus without getting hurt?
Different people use different methods and it does depend on the particular plant (species, size, etc.) to be repotted. Generally the use of gloves is not a good idea as they can be clumsy and result in damage to the plant. The exception to this is when handling Opuntias (Prickly Pear cacti), the fine glochids of which detach from the plant and irritate the skin. Many small cacti can be handled gently with bare hands, do not squeeze the plant, merely support it and the spines should not pierce the skin. Larger, heavier plants can be handle by wrapping newspaper around them, or by using improvised tools such as coathanger wire, spoons, etc. Particular care must be taken for cacti with ‘fish-hook’ spines (such as Mammillaria bocasana), the spines on these easily attach themselves to skin, gloves, etc. and unless carefully released will cause damage to the plant. TIP : Remember the spines are only above the soil – once the old pot has been removed the plant can be safely handled by means
