Los Angeles Lakers News Lakers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports) Both Denver and Houston got a small slice of revenge against the Lakers for eliminating them from the 2009 postseason, and that put the Lakers on the brink of their first three-game losing streak since acquiring Pau Gasol on Feb. 1, 2008. The Lakers had nine previous times been pushed to two-game skids with Gasol, twice in the postseason. This time they had to stand up to the losing streak without Gasol, who still hasn’t played this season because of a strained right hamstring. They did it easily, blowing out Detroit on Tuesday night at Staples Center. Gasol is now on his way to save the day, so to speak. He is planning to play Thursday against visiting Chicago after missing the season’s first 11 games.

Los Angeles Lakers News Lakers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports) Phil Jackson is used to poking and prodding Pat Riley’s coaching tree, and his mind games seem to bear fruit at times. Jackson’s latest dig at Riley was a suggestion that the Miami Heat’s early season struggles under inexperienced head coach Erik Spoelstra was setting the team up to have Riley come in and take over coaching again. When it was longtime Riley assistant coach Stan Van Gundy, now head coach in Orlando, who vocally disagreed with Jackson’s speculation, Jackson noted Friday night: “I didn’t realize that Stan was that sensitive about the issue, and that’s unfortunate.” Van Gundy was the coach who resigned from the Heat’s head job before Riley took over en route to the NBA championship in 2006.
