How do I protect others from giardiasis?
People with active diarrhea need to be excluded from settings where they may spread the illness such as school, daycare centers, or other group activities, until the diarrhea stops. Daycare centers should teach the importance of handwashing to children and employees alike. Employees should wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after every diaper change, even if wearing gloves. Carefully dispose of sewage and disposable diaper wastes so as not to contaminate surface or groundwater. Avoid swimming pools if you have giardiasis. Giardia cysts are resistant to chlorine levels used in swimming pools and are passed in the stools of infected people for several weeks, even after they no longer have symptoms.
