How do i properly use tomato cages?
Choosing the Tomato CageChoose a sturdy wire tomato cage. If you can bend the wire with your hands, the cage will probably not support the weight of a mature tomato plant and the fruit it produces. The metal stakes at the bottom should be long enough to allow the cage to be inserted at least 6 inches into the soil.Installing the Tomato CageMake sure the root system of the tomato plant is not damaged when the cage is inserted. Install the tomato cage when the tomato plant is between 8 and 12 inches high, inserting the ends at least 6 inches into the soil. The sooner a tomato cage is installed in the growth stage of a plant, the less damage the root system is likely to incur. Use one cage per tomato plant.Positioning Tomato Plants in CagesPosition tomato plants in cages to insure proper spacing and avoid misshapen branches. Pull the leaves of the tomato plant through the wire guides.
