Hiking the Appalachian Trail is very strenuous, but you will see some of the most beautiful scenery in America, from the gorgeous Appalacian Mountains to Mount Khatadin in Maine. You need to plan your hike carefully and safely. First, make sure you have accurate maps of the entire trail; these maps should indicate the altitude and terrain descriptions on each leg of the journey so you will know what kind of clothing to pack and wear. Unless you plan to detour from the trail and stay in town lodging, you will need all-weather camping gear, including bear-proof containers. Take plenty of rain gear, and take a radio, several flash lights, extra batteries and some kind of communication device like a CB radio; cell phones may not work on some parts of the trail.
