How do I properly clean cast iron pots and pans?
So you’ve made some pretty tasty burgers in your cast iron skillet – and now you need to clean that messy pan. First, wipe it out with paper towels, and soak it in hot water for a few minutes. Gently scrub the pan with a washcloth to remove any food left in the pan. This is usually all that is needed. Stubborn cooked-on or burnt-on food is best removed by soaking the pan in hot water and using a plastic scouring pad if necessary. Soaking your pan in a solution of 3 tablespoons of washing soda or baking soda per 1 quart of water can also be helpful. After you pan is clean and dry, apply a thin, even coat of oil and store it in a dry place.
