How do I print LaTeX documents as pamphlets or in other exotic formats?

To print LaTeX documents in pamphlet or ‘two-up’ format (i.e. two A5 pages side-by-side on an A4 sheet) you need to process the A4 PostScript file using commands from the psutils family. However, these programs contain some bugs which can cause the resulting output to suddenly revert to single-sided full-size A4 format. To address this problem, you should first convert the dvi file generated by LaTeX using the following dvips command dvips -K mydoc where mydoc is the name of your LaTeX document. The -K (that’s a capital K) option removes certain comments from the resulting PostScript that are known to upset psutils. Then, to print in a double-sided ‘two-up’ format do psnup -2 mydoc.ps | lp -d cm-laser substituting cm-laser with cm-laser2 if it’s a long document. Alternatively, to print as a pamphlet, type the following psbook mydoc.ps | psnup -2 | pstops ‘2:0,1U(1w,1h)’ |lp -d cm-laser again substituting cm-laser with a different printer name if required.
