How Do I Prepare My 2 Year Old Son For Baby # 2 ?
Your feelings are valid…but I’m going to be straight with you here….your son is too young to “prepare” him. His mind doesn’t work like a five or six year old so until the baby actually arrives don’t really make a big to do about it you’ll be wasting your time and energy. He’s too young to try and explain this abstract concept. I’d get him a doll right before the baby is to arrive and you can start role playing with him. Take him over to the hospital when you’re in your ninth month…show him around and let him see where “mommy” is going to be when his new sister or brother is born. Tell your son he can have jello up there when he comes to meet baby. My daughters are 20 mos. apart so my older one can’t even remember life before her sister. She was almost three when she got a baby brother and then I had another boy. Kids are so resilient and grown-ups underestimate all the time just what “literal” thinkers they are.
