How do I prepare for the arrival of my new koi?
All new koi should be quarantined three weeks prior to introduction into any pond regardless of origin. A quarantine system can be as simple as a wading pool or as elaborate as a full-blown, but separate, pond. The common requirements are the capacity to maintain good water quality through out the quarantine period, vigorous aeration, and a stable temperature. Having the ability to heat your quarantine tank above 72 F, and netting to prevent fish from leaping from your tank, is recommended. Before your box arrives add 2 to 3 lbs rock salt to your quarantine tank for every one hundred gallons of water, and condition (remove chlorine) your water before adding any fish. To condition water use one of many water-conditioning products available from most pet stores, or fill your tank several days in advance and aerate the water heavily to dissipate chlorine.
