How do I open a Word 97 document in older versions of Word?
Microsoft Word 97 saves files in a different format than that used by earlier versions of Word, including both Word 95 and Word 6.0. If you want to use a document created with Word 97 with an early version of Word, you convert the document when you save itjust like when you save a WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS document as a Word 97 document. Choose File | Save As, and change Save as type to “Word 6.0/95 (*.doc)”. You may also want to change the File name:, but that is not required.
