The recommended way to obtain failure and repair information is through empirical testing. This may be through in-house testing of components and parts or from information supplied by the vendor. ReliaSoft takes the position that this type of directly-obtained component information is the best way to represent the failure and repair characteristics of the components, and consequently will produce the best results for the system-level analysis. However, ReliaSoft recognizes that this information may not always be available for those who wish to perform a system reliability analysis. This may be due to a lack of affordable parts for testing early in the development process or simply due to the desire to “blue sky” and play around with potential design configurations without having to undergo costly testing procedures.
