How do I manage ‘community based learning’ placements of students with a person or an organisation that is not an ABN registered business?
Purpose This is not a policy document, its intent is only to answer a frequently asked question, received by the Workplace Learning Support Unit, that is: “how do I manage community based learning placements for students with organisations or volunteers who are not employers (such as retirees, unemployed subject specialists/mentors etc), where the organisation or volunteer does not have an ABN and is therefore not categorised as a business for industrial, tax or other purposes”. Most commonly this situation may arise in programs requiring mentors to inspire students in a range of activities for programs such as MARSSS, Tutor Support, Co-Pilots and Community Based Learning etc. The following is a consolidation of available advice on this issue.
