Your friends mom was kind of right. The reason she suggested dying your hair red first is because if you don’t, your hair will pick up a lot of the green tones that are in brown hair dye. And, since your hair is so light, it will ultimately turn out with that weird ashy green/gray tint of brown. However, rather than dying your hair red first, you can choose a brown shade that has red in it. Like, anything that says “warm” will have red tones. And obviously there are box colors that will say “reddish brown” or “cinnamon” or “auburn” etc. Any of these types of colors will help to neutralize the green and ashy tones that a “natural” brown will have more of.
