To stop your dog barking at intruders, you must remove either the intruder or the dog from the situation. Often this behaviour can be stopped simply by going to the dog and reassuring her that everything is okay, when there is no intruder. Make sure that you praise the dog when she does warn you appropriately of strangers. ~~~~Teaching your dog not to bark at strangers (the paperboy, mailman) is harder to do, because you need the person’s cooperation. You need to gradually introduce them on a daily basis to the dog which is restrained by your side. (This is only advisable if your dog is friendly and doesn’t pose a danger to the individuals you are trying to introduce.) Otherwise, you could get the “intruder” to slip your dog a treat through the mail slot in your door. Gradually the dog should learn to recognize them as friends rather than intruders, and not feel the need to bark.
