How do I make better tasting ice from my refrigerators automatic ice maker?
Clean out your refrigerator. Smells from bad food or decomposed spills (particularly from seafood or juice from raw meat) will linger in a refrigerator, causing a smell that will be transferred to your ice. Remove everything from it and unplug it (to thaw out the freezer). Then use tilex or some bleach-based cleaner to clean all surfaces of the refrigerator and freezer. Wipe this all down with a wet cloth and dry thoroughly. Throw out any questionable food and put the rest back in the refrigerator. Allow the ice maker to cycle a couple times. Throw out that ice and then let the hopper fill up. Your ice should taste a lot better now. After you clean up the refrigerator, put an open box of baking soda in there. This will help eliminate odors in the future. Installing an in-line water filter will help if it’s the bad water making the smell. But, I’ve found that this is more often caused by a dirty, stinky refrigerator and freezer.
