For two computers to ‘act as one’ the nearest technology is Clustering. This is when you combine the processing power of multiple nodes (computers) to allow faster processing of tasks, or provide redundancy incase of failure, among other uses. In order to do this yourself you will need an operating system that supports Clustering, and a relatively fast network. Clustered nodes benefit from the use of shared hard disk space (depending on the cluster use), such as Network Attached Storage on optical fibre connections, but a Samba or similar file share on the network would fulfill this on a personal cluster.
