To legally change your name after you get married, take your marriage certificate to the local Social Security Administration office and apply to change your name. You can find the application form online and fill it out before you get to the office for convenience. You may opt to make an appointment to reduce waiting time. If you have been divorced previously, take your divorce decree with you as well. You will have to show a recent photo identification to the Social Security agent to prove that you are who you say you are. Once the SSA processes the name change, you will receive a new Social Security card reflecting the update. You can then use this to change your driver’s license, tag registration, passport or any other form of identification.
