How do I learn how to write good country song lyrics?
First off, ignore all those ignorant creeps that say all southerners and country fans and wife-beating drunks and then have the nerve to call other people “prejudiced”. Second, listen to all of the good country music you can get your hands on … develop your taste by listening to the classics, pay attention to their lyrics not only as a good example but also keeping in mind that you don’t want to just rewrite other people’s songs. The themes of country music (love, loss, etc.) are fairly constant, but you need to have fresh lyrics to have a really memorable song. When you’re writing, be sure to make the lyrics flow … a lot of first-time songwriters (and some who’ve been around long enough to know better) write verses that are too clunky or choppy for anyone to sing along with.
