How do I know whether an ICONCLASS code has been used in the Bodleian Ballads index?
While the code is highlighted in the Tree Browser or Hierarchy Browser, look at the numbers in the lower left corner of the ICONCLASS window, in the form N/N; if the first number is 0, there are no examples of that particular code in the illustrations index. In that case, there may be more or less specific descriptions entered in the illustrations index. If the second number is also 0, you must ascend the hierarchy to find a code which has been used in the index. If the second number is greater than 0, more specific codes at a lower level in the hierarchy have been used, and you may descend the hierarchy to find them (or else use the current term to search with truncation in the database, which will find this and all the more specific terms in one search) When you have found the appropriate ICONCLASS code, switch from the ICONCLASS browser to the Browse/Search form of the Bodleian Ballads Project by clicking the Browse/Search title on the left-hand side of the screen.
