How do I know when my freezer is self defrosting?
You can tell if it is self defrosting by the lack or presence of ice build up. A freezer you need to defrost slowly gets a coating of ice over time. After a year it will be a few inches thick on all the outer surfaces (not outside, that isn’t very clearly written, but I mean the walls inside) of the freezer. A self defrosting freezer goes through a mild heating periodically to help prevent that layer of ice from forming. If it was called a deep freeze, those are usually not self defrosting. If you have owned the freezer for more than a few months and do not have a layer of ice around the outside, it is self defrosting. Usually only the edges get warm, so take the things off the bottom and place them closer to the center and they should be fine after today. If it is not self defrosting, or it does not re-cool after today, then you need to call a repairman.
