How do I know if theres any new, unread, messages in an old thread?

The thread icon will change from to , the arrow indicating that there are new messages in the thread. Another option is to click on the left arrow near the upper right hand corner until the “Unread” field is displayed. This field tells you how many messages in a given thread are unread.
