How do I know if I have a Flat Head (L) or Overhead Valve (F) engine in my old model Jeep?
A. Don’t feel bad, this has confused folks from the beginning, because it is just opposite to what you think, but it is necessary to know to obtain the correct parts for your Jeep. Basically the easiest way to tell by a quick glance is that if you look at the top of the engine and you see spark plugs on top of the engine you have a FLAT head which is classified as an L head. If you see a valve cover on top then you have an Overhead Valve engine which is classified as an F head.
