Algae is going to grow in any standing water, especially if it’s kept nice and warm by the sun. The only way to prevent this is by making the water an unattractive growth medium for the algae, or simply changing the water with enough frequency that you don’t have to worry about a significant algae growth. Chlorine is the easiest method, but you’re going to have to be very careful not to use too much in such a small volume of water. You don’t want to ruin the pool, or give your kids chemical burns. You could get a chlorine test kit and put in a small amount, maybe a half cup at a time, while testing it as you go. This is probably not the best solution because of the safety concerns, and expense. The easiest and safest solution is simply to change the water every 2-3 days, or whenever you can see the algae starting to build up. The algae itself probably isn’t a health risk, but it is gross. Changing the water every few days should keep it in check, and if you sponge out the pool and use
