We recently introduced a new St.bernard pup to our 2 year old rottie. Our rottie was kept on leash so she could be controlled to not get over excited while she was allowed to sniff the newcomer out. The next day they walked around together and played a bit. If your 4 year old already gets along with other dogs he should be easy to introduce to the new puppy. Just let him sniff out the pup and get used to him. While the new pup is younger always watch them when playing till the pup can hold his own as well.
