Buy an upgrade version of Windows XP. To install Windows XP over top of an existing Windows installation and not have to format and start over, you need an upgrade version. Insert the Windows XP upgrade version in the CD drive. Choose the option to install. Windows will restart your computer. You will have to accept the license agreement and choose your time zone and set other options, and then enter your serial number. Windows XP will upgrade Windows 98. You may wish to backup your files before updating.
