How do I install an exterior flood light fixture above my back door?
Mountings above the door you should have a header there so plenty of solid wood get an exterior surface mount box test the location with a 3 to 31/2 inch deck screw to be sure you have something solid there .As far as using the existing switch tie the light into the current fixture you have outside you will need remove that fixture and install an exterior box there also to have access to run the wire from there to the flood light . as far as the extra switch check the recepticals in the room odds are one of them is hooked to it used to be pretty common for the outlets to be switched for the table lamps.For the run from the existing light to the new one run the wire in carlon pvc pipe otherwise if you sell later you will have code issues.
