How do I incorporate LaTeX symbols into my XFig drawings?

(See also the related PSFrag discussion below). The way most people incorporate xfig figures into their latex documents is by exporting the figure as a postscript file and then using \epsffile within a figure environment. However, it would be nice in many circumstances to be able to put latex symbols, text, whatever into the figure and have them processed by latex and still appear as a part of the figure. For example, subscripts and superscripts are a pain to simulate in xfig and easy to do in latex. For that matter, if you have commands representing complex symbols, wouldn’t it be nice to just specify the command directly and have it converted into latex symbols when latexing? Well, it turns out xfig is capable of doing this — if you are willing to live with a few restrictions.
