How do I improve my sight reading skills (piano)?
My definition of sight reading is to be able to take a new piece of music you have never attempted before and play it at tempo with the first reading. This is a skill that comes more natural to some than to others. One can practice sight reading and improve their skill but some of us will never be great sight readers. What you are asking is to improve your music reading so you can learn more advanced music. Sight reading is not necessary to do this. Many pianist who play very advanced pieces are not great sight readers. You just need to be able to understand what is on the written page. The rest just comes with lots and lots of practice. Repetition may be the key word here. The more you practice the quicker you will be able to recognize the notes and with each new piece your reading will improve.
