How do I identify whether a heading in CSH is the authorized (i.e. the preferred) version of a subject heading?

All terms are authorized, unless otherwise designated as unauthorized. Unauthorized headings, also known as non-preferred terms, are clearly identified in CSH by all of the following: 1) an asterisk (*) on the search results page for a heading; 2) placement under the “UF” (used for) initials in the thesaurus view of a subject record; and, 3) placement in the 4XX field(s) on the MARC view of a subject record. Unauthorized headings are included in CSH as cross-references to authorized headings, to assist you in your subject searches. Unauthorized headings consist of non-preferred synonyms, spelling variants, or syntactical variations to the authorized subject heading.
