Air is separated and removed from the refrigerant by the recovery machine. Each refrigerant recovery machine is required by SAE standard to separate and purge air from the refrigerant as part of the recycling process. In some machines the air purge function is automatic; in others it is manual. The relevant SAE standards are J-2210 for R134a and J-1991 for R-12.
