How do I grow ginger in Melbourne, and how to harvest the root?
Pearly, I learned this on accident, and then found more info when my ginger started needing more attention. I’m a big fan of fresh ginger. I think it’s an amazing food. 1. Buy a good sized healthy root. I got mine in the produce section of the grocery store. 2. Put it in a clear plastic bag and leave it somewhere warm and light. Not hot, just warm, like room temps. Mine got started when setting on my kitchen counter. After 3 or 4 weeks of setting there, it will start putting out little roots. They will be thick, and it’s just like when you keep a potato too long and it starts to make roots. You might also get the start of the plant coming up. 3. When it’s pretty clear that you have some roots starting to grow, you can plant it. Put it in some dirty, not very deep, maybe just an inch. It will start growing. The leaves aren’t very thick. They taste good, like mild ginger, but they also have a powdery texture that I don’t like (I chewed on one just to see how it was. I read about it first
