How do I go about introducing an imperfection like a dent in a perfect structure?
Imperfections are introduced using the keyword *IMPERFECTION. There are a number of ways of specifying this. The simplest is to specify the displacement which will move the nodes from its initial position to the dented position under the IMPERFECTION keyword. Only the nodes involved in creating the dent are included.
