How do I get Ubuntu (7.04) to work with Cox High Speed Internet?
(For the benefit of other Askville users who also may read this answer, I’m going to assume no Linux and/or computer networking experience, so I’ll try to provide as much relevant detail as I can in the instructions below.) There could be a number of reasons why you’re not able to connect to the Internet. Sometimes it may seem like it’s not connecting when it really is connected. For example, if your computer can’t contact a name server, typing “http://amazon.com/” into a web browser will return a server-not-found error. It seems as though there’s no Internet connection, but typing one of Amazon.com’s IP addresses (e.g. “http://72.21.206.80/”) works. We’ll need to test each part of a network connection to find out what’s wrong. Debugging a network connection on a Linux system isn’t all that different from Macs and Windows. The overall concepts are very similar and involve checking the drivers, the network card, the network settings and the network connection. A couple of questions… –
