How do I get speech recognition in Vista to work with Live Messenger 8.1?

Speech recognition works pretty well in Vista. However, when I have Live Messemger running, and place the cursor in the text box where the messages are typed, Vista VR interprets everything said as a command and nothing as the actual text to type.
