There are many things that might be feeding this “algae”. 1) Check your nitrates as it LOVES nitrates. Getting those lower will certainly help eliminate it. An elevated level of nitrates after 4 years is a likely problem. A period of more frequent water changes will help reduce it. 2) Also, how old is your light bulb? Over time the lights can fade in intensity and put off more red spectrum which this stuff also loves. Replacing the bulbs often will help. If you didn’t have coral, I would say leave the light off for a couple days, or only use the blue lights, but you don’t want to harm the coral. 3) Another cause might be phosphates. Are you running carbon? It needs to be replaced about once a month. If left in the filter too long it stops working and can actually start to increase the phosphate levels over time. Remove any old carbon. You can also get some phosphate reduction media and run it for a few days or weeks to lower the levels. 4) Another thing this stuff loves is silicates. W
