How do I get rid of or override the original package so that the downloaded code is executed? Should I just remove the PROM from the card?

Remove the PROM for PCI card. CPU PROM will still create a device node for the card, but the “name” property will have a value of the form “pci,“. Create a name property for your device in your downloaded code with a value different than the one created by CPU PROM. And then refer to your device by full device path.
