How do I get my speed boat onto the plane with tilt and trim?

For maximum performance, start with the engine trimmed fully in. Accelerate smoothly but speedily to full throttle, when the boat breaks onto a plane, begin to trim out a bit. As the engine rpms reach about 3/4 full, back the throttle off to match the rpms (somewhere between 3500 and 5000, depending on the WOT of your engine. Now you can start to play with the throttle and trim to achieve your performance goal. For general cruising, run about 2/3-3/4 WOT. Trim the engine so that steering becomes neutral (pulls neither to port or starboard). Rougher water- trim in, smooth water, trim out. For flat out speed, run at WOT minus about 300 rpm. Trim out until you reach maximum rpms, or the boat begins to cavitate or chine-walk, or just generally gets too squirrelly to hang on to. Hi-speed cornering, trim in slightly to get the bow down, increase your steering angle, and maintain rpms with the throttle. WARNING….. these skills take practise, and it’s real easy to get upside down, or bucked
