First make sure that the doorways between the passages around the castle and the rooms in question are open. Next go down to the Gem and enter another world (avoid Talorus). Save the game. Cast the Open (Ex Ylem) spell, but don’t use it on anything. Go back though the Gem and ascend to the Castle and go to the chest you wish to open. Use the unreleased spell on the chest to unlock it.
