How do I get admitted into a psychiatric hospital?
Your GP can absolutely help you, in fact, he or she is probably the best person to speak to. GPs handle most referrals to specialist services, including psychiatry, so they’ll know what to do. There are various options other than admission, too – you may be given an urgent appointment with a psychiatrist, or the community mental health team may come to your house to see you if you’d like. This might be more help to you if you feel you could manage at home with some extra support – psychiatric hospitals provide a good service, but they’re not always the most pleasant places to be. I hope you find this helpful. In the meantime, if you need support, try to speak to the Samaritans or an organisation like Rethink (google them for details) – don’t keep struggling alone. Best wishes for your recovery – I’ve been there and I know it’s awful, but you can come through it!
