How do I get a Social Security Card replacement?
You must have ID to get a replacement card. A birth certificate cannot be used for ID because it does not show your continued existence. You need to show them one of the following: State driver’s license, State ID or US passport. If you do not have one of these documents, they will also accept a medical card, school ID, or employee ID. The document must be unexpired and show either your name and picture or if no picture it must show other biographical information such as date of birth, parent’s name or place of birth. They do not accept photocopies. If you have no ID at all, you can sign a statement at Social Security stating you are who you say you are and if you can answer a few questions about where you have worked, they will give you a Social Security number verification printout. This can usually be used to get your State driver’s license and or State ID. You can then return to Social Security to apply for your replacement card.
