I am assuming it is the type of faucet with separate handles and not just one handle. The most likely cause is a worn valve washer. these are little disks of hard rubber scewed to the bottom of the valve stem and sealing against the seat and you need to turn the water off (usually another set of valves under the sink but sometimes just the one main valve near the water meter, likely in basement) These washers are cheap and can be bought in assortment packs. It is important to match the new washer with what is supposed to be there. You need to be a bit handy for this.
