The low connection speed you are experiencing could be due to the modem firmware. Some batches of the iMac internal modem were loaded with older firmware version. If your modem firmware is less than version 1.3.5, you need to upgrade it. You can get the latest firmware from the vendor whom you purchased your iMac. Alternatively, you can also download it from http://www.info.apple.com/swupdates and choose the modem updater version 1.3.5.
