Put on disposable plastic gloves. Sand the furniture all over with 150 grit sandpaper. Make sure to sand the furniture in the direction of the grain. Use wood glue to glue down any spots of raised wood. Fill in gouges or splits with wood filler.Condition the pine wood with wood conditioner before staining. Apply the conditioner in a circular motion with a cloth, making sure to rub the conditioner into the pine wood completely. Pine wood is porous and will absorb the conditioner.Apply wood stain with a paint brush, stirring the pigment in the can before applying. Let the stain dry, and apply a second coat if needed. To seal the wood, apply an insect- and water-proof varnish. Paint two coats of varnish.
