Try looking at your registration card. You are going to have to get that plate replaced by the way. Your vehicle will probably have to go to DVL for an inspection, and a certification of VIN will be issued for attachment to the vehicle. I am not sure what year they started, but vehicles now have hidden VIN plates for police verification of vehicles. What kind of repair did you do that you removed the VIN plate to start with? You are going to need a good explanation for such a suspicious action when you go to the DVL, because those plates aren’t legally removable. You are going to have to prove it isn’t an attempt to cover a stolen vehicle, or get an unsalvageable write-off back on the road.
