Most train companies start offering bargain tickets 10 weeks in advance, and those are the heavily discounted fares, like for instance London to Newcastle return for as low as £17.80 if booked on GNER’s website, compared to £91.40 if you buy a return saver ticket on the day. These tickets are non refundable though and have limited change, so make sure you can stick to the train you’re booked on before buying any tickets. It’s very much a first come first serve policy, so get in there as quickly as possible.
