How do I feed my newborn Chihuahua puppy?
Many things need to be addressed here. Do you have a breed mentor who is experienced in raising Chi puppies? They would be best to help if so. Has your vet checked the puppy to make sure there are no abnormalities like cleft palate? Has the mother fed the puppy at all? If not you will need to try and express some of the mother’s milk otherwise the puppy will have no antibodies and will be open to many diseases. The next best option would be a foster mother if the puppy is ok. The puppy MUST be kept warm and not allowed to get chilled. You must not attempt to feed if she has become chilled until she has warmed up to a normal body temperature. If hand raised she will need formula and possible tube feeding which only a vet or breeder can show you correctly. You may be able to bottle feed providing she still has a suckle reflex. You need help to show you all this, good luck.
You can use an eye dropper at first and this is avail at most Pharmacies and Yes you can get a syringe which is very good but you have to know how to hold your pup or the milk can go down the wrong way and it ends up struggling to breath.Get the eye dropper first and make sure the milk formula is mixed correctly and warm not hot.Once this is done graduate to a syringe but be careful using this and then you graduate to a small bottle with a tiny teat which you must put a small hole in so pup can slurp out of it like it does its Mum.Sorry about this little one, been there and done that and am glad it is over as l got no sleep for 3-4 weeks and you must feed every 2-3 hours day and night so good luck Ask the vet or Pharmacies for the plastic syringes and not all carry these and do not forget to sterilize these before you use them and this has to be done all the time
